An exclusion is most useful when you can name the unwanted outcome. Instead of asking a model to avoid everything generic, identify the instrument, production treatment or structural habit that is pulling this particular idea away from your brief.

Use the destination's exclude control

Suno documents Exclude under Advanced Options in Custom Mode. It can hold descriptions of elements you do not want, such as instruments. Genre Genie prepares an exclude list for you to review and copy; it does not send a song-generation request to Suno or guarantee that every exclusion will be followed.

Pair a negative with the desired replacement

Avoid big drops still leaves many possible arrangements. Add the positive choice in your brief: gradual layering, a repeated groove with small variations, or a chorus that widens through harmony. Avoid polished is similarly vague. Decide whether you want dry space, audible room texture, softer transients or a more limited instrument palette. Keep the replacement in the style or sound notes, not buried among negatives.

Check for direct contradictions

A style that asks for a breathy lead vocal while excluding vocals contains an obvious tension. Other overlaps are subtler: asking for analog synth warmth and then excluding every synth may not express your actual intent. Genre Genie flags literal overlaps as optional checks. It cannot decide every musical ambiguity for you, so inspect the relevant phrase and make the narrower choice.

Keep the list connected to what failed

A growing list of every annoyance can obscure the current track. Start with the few exclusions that defend the main idea. After a listening pass, add a specific unwanted element only when it actually matters. A different direction may need a different list; a detail you exclude in one experiment can become the purpose of another.

Do not use names as the whole instruction

An artist name is not a precise explanation of the part you want to remove. Describe the identifiable production trait instead: a very bright lead, a shouted refrain, dense ornamental hats or a large reverberant snare. Reference songs belong in listening notes, where you can explain the single element you are evaluating. They are suggestions to assess, not verified audio analysis.

Retain useful output when the format varies

Your model may return an exclusion list as an array rather than a comma-separated string. Genre Genie normalizes that harmless difference. A longer explanation or an optional metadata mismatch should not destroy a usable direction. You remain responsible for reviewing the creative choices before copying the result into the destination tool.

Illustrative example
supersaw leads, oversized festival drops, aggressive vocal shouts

Example exclusions for a restrained, intimate dance brief. The positive counterpart is a steady groove, small builds and a close understated voice.
